Go out and get some fresh air, hard to believe that was once a thing. What would we not give or do to have that again. What we want most is that we cannot have. And what we cannot have the most is what we once had and lost.
The thing that is most painful is not that we’ve lost it. Neither how we lost it. Not the fact that it was entirely our fault . The worst part is that we did it deliberately, all in pursuit of vanity.
It’s hard to avoid these trains of thought. Specially while queuing along hundreds to get our allowance of food and rations. You see, without fresh air, food is hard to grow. Who would have thought that.
So, being the very clever and entrepreneurial species that we are, we built these pods to help us grow food again. But despite all our ingenuity and our efforts, it turns out that supporting the human population require planetary scale.
But as the climate keeps spiralling, more and more pods are lost every year to the increasingly stronger storms. So the queues keep getting longer, and the rations smaller.
And all the while we ask, why did this happen to us? The answer, my friend, is because we couldn’t help ourselves.
